Internships

Just a reminder that from November until about February is the peak time that many companies, government agencies like the National Labs and NSF Research Experience for Undergraduate Research universities etc. will be posting their internships availability.

NASA-Ames has their internship page listed here:
https://www.nasa.gov/learning-resources/internship-programs/

and letting candidates know their decision by February, but can  trickle out various internships until summer.  It is better to apply early though.

While only some internships are for graduate students, there are still some to choose from. Probably juniors and seniors have the most opportunity but all levels can find some internships which you would be competitive even if you have to look harder.

It is hard to beat internship experience on your resume for helping you to stand out.

NSF Research Experience for Undergraduate Research universities are listed here.

Searching by keyword seems to be the best way to search since many areas like Energy, Sustainability, Environment, Biochemical Engineering etc. are multidisciplinary.

You can use LinkedIN, Indeed.com, Monster.com etc. to search for internships.  Using your major like chemical or materials engineering and/or a keyword search like batteries or energy storage intern can be a good way to search.

Even an internet search for a specific company e.g. Valley Water internships can be a good way to find the correct links for information and to apply.
I just searched that way and found

Company websites are a great place to look.

- See Bloom Energy, Genentech, Applied Materials, Jabil, Valley Water etc. and search for Intern in the Careers or Jobs section for any company that you  would be interested to work at.

An internet search is useful to find the company internship websites.  e.g. I searched for Applied Materials internship and found
https://www.appliedmaterials.com/us/en/careers/internship-program.html

Or Genentech Internship
https://careers.gene.com/us/en/internships

I did notice that a few companies like Bloom Energy call some positions an Intern but they really are full-time jobs.  You have to read the small print.

Don't forget SJSU Handshake where a number of industries post internship and job positions.

An up-to-date resume and LinkedIn profile are invaluable.  The Career Center has coaches to help you get these together, including a professional headshot for your LinkedIn profile.
