The Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Studies was approved in Fall 2004. Soon began the effort to disseminate information among the university community via posters, fliers, email announcements, and information sessions. Also, parallel effort was directed to recruit faculty with global interest to teach Global Studies courses. The program was formally launched in Spring 2005 with the offering of GLST 1A: Introduction to Global Studies taught by Professor Chris Cox (left), Department of Sociology. He is continuing teaching the course in Fall 2005. |
Additionally, this time we have Professor Robert Bornstein, Meteorology Department, teach GLST 1B: Introduction to Global Studies. Professor Bornstein has special passion for global environment. Both are required part of the Core in the program. Both classes are fully subscribed.
In Spring 2005, 5 students declared to major and 2 students elected to minor in Global Studies. Currently, there are 12 declared majors and 3 minors in the program. It is a remarkable development for a brand new program. We have developed Program and Advising handbook to guide students and help them make steady progress towards completing program requirements. Ms. Blanca Sanchez may be the first graduate in Global Studies in Spring of 2006 as she also happens to be our very first major for a Second bachelor’s degree. The stream of inquiries seems to show that interest in Global Studies as a major is certainly robust to achieve a growth in the number of majors.
This Fall term we are planning a series of activities for students and faculty to promote get-to-know and networking. Our goal is to provide a vibrant, challenging, exciting, and rewarding learning experience for our majors. In Global Studies, we will work for students and help them discover their future in the world.
