A Brief History of NCAGE

In the early 1990's, a small group of NAFSA members in Hawaii conducted some short-term training in areas of international education for their state’s high level college and university administrators. Upon learning about this project through a program at the 1993 NAFSA Region XII Conference, the initiators contracted the presenters, including Lee Zeigler (formerly of Stanford University), Maurice Harrari (International Association of University Presidents) and Melinda Wood (East-West Center, Hawaii) for guidance in developing a more permanent international education feature in Northern California. In 1994, with development grants from NAFSA-AIE and the Council for International Educational Exchange and with business and clerical support from the Institute of International Education, NCAGE was launched.

Mission Statement

Northern California Advocates for Global Education (NCAGE) is dedicated to strengthening the international role and responsibilities of post-secondary education in service to society, and in facilitating the involvement of the private and public sectors in the pursuit of these goals. It is motivated by the imperatives of an interdependent and multicultural world that increasingly demands its citizens possess global awareness and competencies.

Promoting Global Education

In keeping with its mission statement, NCAGE seeks to engage higher education administrators, faculty and staff in promoting global education. Active members come from community colleges, 4-year universities, and Ph.D.-granting schools, including both private and public institutions.
NCAGE activities led to a series of annual Forums on current issues.

NCAGE currently holds two regional meetings that attract scores of participants. The conference sessions deal with globalizing campus life, building international curricula, articulation between schools, and study abroad programs. Since 2005 NCAGE dispenses mini-grants to encourage innovation and collaboration among member institutions.
